Shots fired at BJP leader’s residence in Bengal’s Noapara; firing incident caught on CCTV

Noapara in West Bengal remained tense after gunmen allegedly opened fire at the residence of BJP organisational district secretary Kundan Singh earlier today, just ahead of the May 4 vote counting.

According to Singh, two men arrived outside his house and opened fire, triggering panic in the area. The incident was captured on CCTV, raising concerns over law and order in the locality.

Singh alleged that the attack was planned to intimidate BJP workers ahead of the results. “Two men, Akash Choudhary and Aman, arrived outside my house, took out their arms, and started firing. They had been spreading terror in the area for many days. The intent was to scare the BJP since Trinamool will be defeated at the polls, but nobody will be scared. We will win the elections,” said Singh.

BJP questions policing

Former Barrackpore MP and Noapara MLA candidate Arjun Singh accused the police of failing to provide adequate protection to BJP members. He claimed the accused were involved in criminal activities, including drug trade, during the elections.

“The culprits, Aman and Akash Choudhary, were detained by the police during the elections as they used to sell drugs in the area. The entire system is intended to scare BJP members so that they do not go for the counting,” said Singh.

He also alleged that despite CCTV footage, action was delayed. The police have video footage, yet there are still no arrests; this means the police administration is a failure. They (culprits) should be arrested,” he said.

Police confirm arrests

However, Washim Khan, Deputy Commissioner (North) of Barrackpore Police Commissionerate, said two individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The accused will be produced before the Barrackpore Sub-divisional Court, where police will seek 10-day custody for further investigation.

The incident has added to rising political tension in the area as parties prepare for the counting day.
